Breast Reconstruction Surgery
by F. Ryan Wermeling, MD
Breast cancer affects one in eight women and is becoming a more common topic in society. Reconstruction after breast cancer surgery is a very personal choice and can be an important part of your victory over breast cancer.
Reconstructive surgery allows for the restoration of size, shape, and symmetry and some newer techniques allow for a more natural breast shape after a mastectomy. This can be performed with either an implant or your own natural tissue from somewhere else on the body.
Most of the time reconstruction can be performed at the time of the mastectomy (immediate reconstruction) but a delayed reconstruction can be performed at any time (even years later). I have a wonderful relationship with the oncologic surgeons I work with and together we develop a plan that is best suited to your oncologic needs and your desires for the future.
