Breast Reduction Surgery
by F. Ryan Wermeling, MD
Many women with large breasts experience poor posture, chronic neck or back pain, and difficulty in finding clothing. Breast reduction is a procedure that reduces the size of the breasts while recreating the contour of a breast that better fits the frame of the body.
Research shows women who undergo breast reduction surgery can have improvement in back or neck pain and are more likely to return to exercise and feel more self-confident.
This is typically performed as an outpatient surgery. Excess breast tissue is removed and the remaining skin and fat are reshaped to provide a proportionate smaller breast. The nipple is moved into a more elevated position.Women with large breasts often have quite uneven breasts. A breast reduction can help to not only reduce the size of the breasts but create more symmetry.
Breast cancer treatment is advancing rapidly. Breast cancers are often found very early and can be treated with a more modest operation called a lumpectomy or partial mastectomy. This allows women to keep their breast. However, the removal of some tumors can cause the breast to lose its round shape. In this case I can perform an oncoplastic procedure to help reshape the breast at the same time as the lumpectomy.
I work closely with the wonderful oncologic breast surgeons in Louisville as a team to give you your cancer treatment and reconstruction in one operation. The other breast can be reduced to ensure symmetry at the same time.
